お弁当の魅力について（What is the essential values of bento?）

お弁当は愛情が詰まっているというような情緒的な話や、健康的だとか、経済的である、という継続することによる具体的な恩恵についての話はよくある。これらは、どちらかといえばお弁当の中身の話で、「箱」についての話はちょっと置き去りになる。

私は、お弁当には中身よりもまず「箱」に大きな価値があると思っていて、ちょっとそこを考えてみようと思います。

1. 家の食卓を持ち運べる最小の道具

(Mobile dining table, Dining table, anywhere)

日々の弁当には、それぞれ家庭で作ったものを詰める。
食卓に並ぶはずの飯碗によそったご飯、皿に盛り付けた主菜、小鉢に盛り付けた副菜。この1度の食事を、弁当箱という１つの箱の中に納めることで、私たちはいつでもどこでも自宅の食卓を持ち運ぶことができ、そしてフタを開けばどこでも食卓と同じものを食べることができる。

Bento is filled with the food made at each home. This means we can carry a dining table and eat homemade food anywhere and anytime, by putting the rice, the main dish and the side dish which are supposed to be served in a bowl, on a plate and in small dishes respectively on the table into a lunch box.

2. 箱に収めることで寂しい感がなくなる

（It can change the value of leftovers）

弁当に、前日の夜や、その日の朝食の残り物を詰める、という人は多い。皿の上に全てをまとめ、ラップをしておいたものを食べるとき、私たちは「残り物」を食べている気分だが、同じものをお弁当箱に詰め変えるだけで、それらは残り物ではなく「お弁当」という１つの料理になる。

There are many people who fill bento with leftovers of the night before. When we eat some food  wrapped on a plate, we feel like we are eating the “leftovers”, but it can dramatically change into a dish called “bento” instead of the “leftovers” by only replacing it into a lunch box.

3.  フタを開ける時、ワクワクしませんか

（ It can produce a little excitement）

なにかのフタを開けるとき、私たちはいつもワクワクする。中に入っているものが何かを知っていたとしても。
弁当箱には、フタがある。そのフタを開ける、という１つのささやかな動きが、食事の中でのワクワクを演出してくれている。

When we open a lid of a lunch box, we are always excited, even if we knew what’s inside it.
A lunch box has a lid. Such a small action as to open a lid produces excitement during a meal.

4. エコフレンドリーである

（It is eco-friendly）

お弁当箱１つあれば、その他の食器は不要。ラップも不要。そしてお弁当箱は、繰り返し何度も洗って使うことができる。それが、すべて天然素材でできていれば、いざいらなくなった時は燃やすことも、土に返すこともできるから、なおさらのことである。

With one lunch box, other tableware, including plastic wrap, is unnecessary. In addition, a lunch box can be washed and used repeatedly. There is nothing to add if it is made of natural materials.
